MEDICINE!
“A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).
What is the meaning of the word ’medicine’? It is panacea. It is the one which provides divine health. It will clear all the sickness and bring in health.
We can find several kinds of medicines in pharmacies. But God has given special medicine to His children which is the merry heart (Proverbs 17:22). One who possesses a merry heart has a smiling face. His face will be attractive and everyone will like those with smiling faces.
When will your heart be merry? Your heart will become merry when Christ comes into it and makes His glory shine upon you. This helps you refrain from worrying over your sins. You place all those things on God and praise Him. The Scripture says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).
Dear children of God, allocate time to spend happily with your wife and children. It is a good medicine. If you are happy in the family, it will help you strongly overcome all the problems prevailing outside. The enemy cannot win over you.
Further, the Scripture says that the words of the wise are good medicine. “There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health” (Proverbs 12:18). When you speak wise words, it brings health and encouragement in others. It is the same tongue which speaks words of encouragement to others and that of discouragement too. When words of encouragement are spoken, it remains as a powerful medicine.
There was a small boy by the name William Colgate. He struggled in poverty and hunger and migrated to a town in search of livelihood. There a servant of God met him. The servant of God encouraged him saying, “Son, one day will come and you will be exalted. Whatever business you do, always try to give the best to the people. Then, God will give you the best. These words encouraged the boy greatly. They seemed to be great medicine for the boy. In the later years, that boy had become the owner of the huge concern “Colgate.”
The Scripture says, “A man has joy by the answer of his mouth and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” (Proverbs 15:23). Think well before speaking whether your words are going to be words of medicine or words of poison. Dear children of God, let the words coming out of your mouth be like good medicine.
To meditate: “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24).
